Buying A Model Helicopter

We are a full service helicopter shop.  I never sell a helicopter with the expectation that the customer is going to buy a helicopter and go out and fly it by themselves.  Helicopters are complex models, and to be successful they require the help of experienced modelers.  When you buy a helicopter from Aero Hobbies, you begin the process of learning to fly.

Step 1: Come in and talk with me about what size heli you are interested in, and what your budget will allow you to buy.  I always tell people that if they have a little extra to spend, let's look at getting a little better radio and maybe a lesser heli.  As they say helicopters come and go, but a radio stays with you.

Step 2: Build your new machine.  I have several guys who would be more than willing to build your helicopter for you.  However, if at all possible, I like to see new modelers take on the challenge themselves.  Helicopters are just giant Erectors sets and fairly easy to build.  The main reason I like for new modelers to build their machines is so they are able to repair them when the inevitable happens.   Call or better yet bring the machine in any time you are unsure of what to do next.   Usually the guys who think they are coming by too often are the ones who do the best job.

Step 3:  Bring me the finished helicopter.  I will check it out, ask you questions about your building, and fix any minor problems.  I will then program your radio, and set your pitches.  This usually takes about an hour or so.   This first hour of set up is free with additional labor being $20 per hour.  I have had very few machines that I had to charge extra for.  This charge is for helicopters that I have to take apart and fix major problems.  Again, the guys who bring their machine in often during step 2 do not take long to set up.  Purchase your Roto-Pod, and field supplies.

Step 4:  Come in to the shop and get a little stick time on the simulator.  The Sim helps immensely especially for those who have never flown.

Step 5: Come out to the field.  I will test fly the machine, making the final set up adjustments, and I will teach you to fly.  You will begin first with the right stick, trying to keep the machine in about a five foot box.  Once you have that under control you will fly the left stick controlling the tail and altitude.  Then the fun begins, YOU HAVE BOTH STICKS!!!!  Your hovering a model helicopter.

Step 6: Continue coming to the field, meet the guys, hang out, fly a little, ask questions, watch, learn, get better, have fun, and make some great new friends.

So that's it!  Get started on this great new hobby of yours.   Learn to fly a model helicopter!!!!!
